doyle interview

Work

Hello, I’m Doyle and I’m in charge of developing the live service API.
  • Q. What is the role of the Video Tech Cell?

The Video Tech Cell is responsible for developing the Daum Pot Player and video live streaming. Users can use the Pot Player to broadcast their own shows to other users or watch other users’ programs. “My Little television”, a program broadcast by the Korean TV station MBC, is a program that broadcasts edited versions of celebrities’ personal internet broadcasting that is shown through the Daum Pot Player.

  • Q. How is your team organized and what is your role in the team?

Our team consists of people who each develop the Daum Pot Player app for Windows, live video streaming, live chat, mobile app live SDK and live service API. I personally am responsible for developing the live service API.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

It may look as if my work requires a lot of communication with other teams, since I am developing an API that is used by everyone inside and outside the company. However, all other teams have to do is use the API I create, so there’s not a lot of communication with other teams.

Competencies

It’s important to do the programming yourself repeatedly and practice.

Work

We do everything that’s related to the database.
  • Q. What is the role of the MySQL Cell?

There are a total of four Cells in Kakao’s Data Platform Part. The Cells are divided by the type of DBMS it works with. The MySQL Cell is responsible for tasks related to the MySQL server, which is used in all Kakao services, including KakaoTalk, the mobile messenger service used by most people in Korea. To elaborate, we’re responsible for data modeling, migration and integration, as well as MySQL server installation, performance tuning and operation.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

In the MySQL Cell, members of the Cell do not have a specific given role. We all work together. Individual members may sometimes be given project-like tasks. An individual member, or a few members, will develop a database management tool the Cell needs, conduct tests on the new version of the database or conduct tests on improving the existing database server’s performance and share the process and results to the rest of the Cell. These projects are conducted voluntarily and other Cell members are welcome to join the projects at any time.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

Most of my work has to be done with other teams, since most database-related requests and inquires are made by the developing teams. Before a new service is launched, discussions on how the structure of the database server should be laid are held with developers working on the new service. If developers have additional database-related requests, I also hold further discussions with the developers on how the requests can be applied and implemented. I also meet and discuss with system engineers in the event inspections have to be made in the sub-platform (OS, hardware) in order to make improvements in the database server’s performance.

Competencies

The process of self-learning is very important.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

Basically, this job requires knowledge in computer science, especially in concepts that acts as the foundation for computer science, including data structure and operating systems. It’s also good to have knowledge in programming, which will enable you to look at database with a wider perspective.

  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

You must always be ready to think and learn in order to discover and understand things you need to know about a specific situation. Since the process of discovering and studying situations is done voluntarily, you will be able to quickly analyze and find solutions to any problematic situation. You will also become more active and be able to gain extensive knowledge, which will in turn strengthen your will work competency.

  • Q. How can I build my competencies/qualities?

It’s important to be persistent and analyze arising problems until a solution is found, rather than ignoring or immediately abandoning the problem just because the problematic area is unfamiliar to you. Make the process of tackling the problem, no matter how small it is, finding the root cause and solving the problem a personal habit

  • Q. What type of personality is suitable for this job?

This work requires a lot of collaboration with other teams and you must be able to easily explain the kind of work you do to people in other fields. Therefore, you must not be afraid to communicate with others and must be logical.

My Story

Become the best database engineer in the best environment.
  • Q. Why would you recommend this job to others?

You’ll get the chance to work with Korea’s largest database. Kakao is current making many efforts to go global, which will provide you with more exciting experience in the future.

  • Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?

You get the opportunity to gain a lot of knowledge in not only database, but also other fields, since database is closely related to other areas. The downside, if there is one, is that you have to be very careful, even when conducting the smallest tasks, since you can lose all the data with one incorrect command. However, if you check all possible occurrences in advance, you will be able to flexibly respond to any problems that arise.

  • Q. What are your most memorable achievements?

When I first joined Kakao, I collected slow queries that deteriorated MySQL server’s performance and built a website where people could see these queries. Developers can now see the queries that are causing problems and fix those queries more actively. I also developed systems such as a monitoring program that collected information on MySQL server’s status. This program was useful, because it helped identify any problems and errors that where occurring in the MySQL server.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

It would be great if he or she had an active attitude towards work. We welcome anyone who is not afraid to investigate any possible improvements that can be made to the existing database system and make helpful proposals to the rest of the Cell. You’re more welcome if you are interested in new technology and able to study and introduce that technology to the Cell.

matt interview

Work

I’m responsible for Kakao’s most important asset, data.
  • Q. What is the role of MySQL Cell?

The Data Platform Part is responsible for data, Kakao’s most important asset, which must be permanently stored by the company in order to provide services continuously. The Data Platform Part, which includes the MySQL Cell, plays two important roles. Our first role is to provide service operational support. We have to ensure that the MySQL server operates services stably, and calculate and secure capacity in order to accommodate the expanding services and increasing number of users. Our second role is to conduct technical research on database solutions, including the MySQL server, and benchmark in order to adopt new technology.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

Each individual’s role is not distinctively defined in our organization, which is responsible for handling database. This means that employees who belong to the MySQL Cell can monitor all MySQL servers and exchange information on new technology at any time. The task of researching and adopting new technology, or operating services, is not assigned to a specific individual, which allows anyone and everyone to operate services and supplement insufficiencies by researching technology and benchmarking.

Competencies

You have to be able to determine what to be curious about and what to concentrate on.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

A database engineer is expected have knowledge in computer science, especially related to data structure and operating systems. But the knowledge you can acquire in school is quite limited. As long as you have a passion for database systems, you will be able to gain sufficient knowledge while working in the field.

  • Q. What made you, Matt, perfect for this job?

I’m perfect for this job because I’ve always been curious about the technology that was used to implement a database server and get excited when I have to determine which technologies to apply by analyzing its pros and cons. When it comes to databases, even the smallest things are directly related to performance and service stability. Therefore, I must be able to determine areas I need to be curious about and areas I need to concentrate on.

  • Q. What competencies and qualities does this job require?

Required competencies are the ability to understand the architecture or characteristics of the database, data structure used in the database, and the pros and cons of such data structure. Required qualities can differ depending on the two database server-related tasks you perform. When operating services stably, you must be able to think carefully and be subtle in order to minimize operational mistakes and data loss. On the other hand, you must have strong curiosity and persistence to quench that curiosity when acquiring new technology or benchmarking.

  • Q. What should I do to develop these competencies/qualities?

I think qualities and attitude is more important that competency. Even if you do the same work as the person next to you, your competency will grow instantly if are curious about the right things, do not hesitate to learn and try to make less mistakes. It won’t take a long time for you to excel in your job.

My Story

Become a database engineer if you have a level of concentration that is comparable to raindrops, which can crack a rock when it repeatedly drops on the same spot.
  • Q. What are your most memorable achievements?

I was the first in Korea to implement Maria DB in all domestic services. I also personally fixed source codes to solve problems in the MySQL server that were caused by data file synchronization algorithms and applied it to all systems in the company. As a result, my efforts promoted security in many services. I also upgraded the MySQL server and developed tools, including MRTE(MySQL Real Traffic Emulator), which upgrades the MySQL server or benchmarks with real-time service traffic.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

It would be great if he or she were highly curious, able to arouse people’s curiosity in areas I would not have thought of and likes everything about databases.

  • Q. What would you like to say to those applying for this position?

People who develop programs and people who manage databases must have very different competencies and qualities. You may do better as a programmer than a database engineer if you want to gain experience in various areas. Become a database engineer if you want to concentrate on one thing only, concentration that can be compared to raindrops that can crack a rock when it repeatedly drops on the same spot.

kenny interview

Work

I study and research values users, advertisers and companies need.
  • Q. What is the role of the DSP Development Part?

The Ad Server Development Cell develops servers that can display the most suitable advertisements in Kakao and non-Kakao services. The advertising section consists of systems that are used by advertisers as well as those used by services. Out of all these systems, ad servers are systems that are used to display actual advertisements to users.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

I develop ad servers. Users, advertisers and Kakao all have different needs. It’s my job to study and research the maximum values that are needed by all related parties.

  • Q. What are the characteristics of this job?

Stability and performance is both crucial since both Kakao and the advertiser experience severe loss if advertisements are not displayed even for a short amount of time.
Moreover, it is not easy to test advertisements since it is not a stand-alone service and only exists inside other services. We have to guarantee all three factors, which are stability, performance and flexibility. However, in order to do so… I can’t explain. You have to see for yourself!

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

Compared to other teams in Kakao, I think I do collaborate a lot. Mutual cooperation with other teams is a natural part of my work since advertisements are included in all services. Since I work with other teams on many occasions, continuous improvements have been made and tasks have been suitably allocated between responsible teams.

Competencies

You can’t beat someone who loves their job!
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

You must be good at developing(programming). It would be advantageous if you had a degree in computer science.

  • Q. What competencies and qualities does this job require?

One, you must love to do developing. There is no UI (advertisements are displayed but there is no button), so you must solve problems by looking at endless codes. Oh, I guess patience is also a prerequisite.
Two, you must be good at cooperating with other people, a trait that is useful when conducting other tasks. The work requires cooperation with numerous cells, and therefore discussions are held and schedules are adjusted continuously. A single miscommunication can have a negative effect on the entire project.
Three, you must be able to analyze data. You must be able to look at the data, formulate numerous assumptions and verify those assumptions to create better results.

  • Q. How can I build competencies/qualities for personal growth?

The only way to be good at developing is to do a lot of it. However, you may find yourself trapped in your own head if you work alone. The most effective way to escape your boundaries is to collaborate with others or have others review your codes.
You will be able to gain a new perspective if you review other people’s codes, discuss and program codes with others.

My Story

Working at Kakao feels like an endless adventure!
  • Q. In your perspective, What are the pros and cons of this job?

The good part of my job is that it’s clear-cut when compared to services, since decisions are made based on data. The bad part of my job is that it requires an enormous sense of responsibility, since issues that occur in my work can lead to critical problems.

  • Q. Why would you recommend this job to others?

My task has a definite goal that is based on true data, so I can easily concentrate on achieving that goal. You may not be able to see drastic growth, but you will be able to witness gradually growing data.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

A person who has a passion for sharing information with others. A person who continuously studies for self-improvement.

  • Q. What would you like to say to those applying for this position?

I used to think that the advertising business was beyond my understanding, since it is so complex and full of jargon. It is complicated, but I now understand that advertising is no different from services.

  • Q. What is it like working at Kakao?

All areas of information and technology exist under one roof. The people here are not afraid of creating something that doesn’t exist. We can move from one team to another relatively easily.
I had the opportunity to work as a developer as well as a project manager in various areas, including enterprise support, map, community and advertising. Working at Kakao feels like an endless and exciting adventure.

harry interview

Work

All services flow through the Daum app.
  • Q. What is the role of the Daum App Development Cell?

As you can guess from the name, our cell is responsible for developing the Daum app. We develop the Daum app for both Android and iOS. The Daum App Development Cell belongs to the client sector.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

I’m in charge of developing the Daum app for iOS. Our cell is responsible for all functions that are available in areas users use directly.

  • Q. How many iOS and Android developers are there?

There are definitely more Android developers. The Android OS market share is higher and the entry barrier for developers is relatively low since it uses Java. iOS cannot be developed with a regular Window PC, so you must be able to use a Mac. iOS market share and demands are low in Korea, so the situation is very different from that of the US and Japan.

  • Q. Can a single app developer work on both OSs?

The initial goal of our team was to enable developers to develop for both iOS and Android and handle servers. Now, each developer has their main area of expertise, and if they’re adventurous enough, they can converge to the other side without any restrictions.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

Since we develop the Daum app, we have to collaborate with all services in the company all the time. In many cases, we have no choice but to collaborate, since services are delivered to users through the Daum app.

My
Competencies

You have to be interested in order to make efforts to grow.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

Most of us are computer science majors. You may be able to earn your place by studying through other means, but at this moment, all of the members in my Cell have degrees in computer science.

  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

First of all, this work has to be right for you. You need to be interested in the work in order to make efforts to grow. You must never be satisfied with the present. Sense of responsibility and communications skills is also required.

  • Q. What can I do to build my competencies?

A good way to build your competency is to build your own app. Study with the developer’s guide provided by Apple and Google and read up on related books. I personally participate in small study groups that are continuously held within Kakao, where we review each other’s codes and provide each other with an opportunity to grow.

My Story

Kakao is a land of opportunity that is at the forefront of mobile services.
  • Q. Is there a memorable episode you wish to share with us?

I had a scary experience right after the Daum app was released because the single sign on (SSO) function did not work in other apps. Since then, I always add an inspection process before the app is distributed.

  • Q. What are the pros and cons of your job?

The good part is that mobile is still hot, so this work gives you a lot of opportunity for personal growth. You’re also able to grow with some very awesome people and experience evolving trends first hand. The bad part is that you have to cooperate with so many teams and communication can feel like a burden.

  • Q. What are your most memorable achievements?

I created the single sign-on (SSO) library. This project is especially memorable because it was the first time I tried the TDD. I have been held back by practical limitations since then, but members of our Cell are making continuous efforts to work with TDD.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

Factors we consider to be important are the person’s basic knowledge, efforts he or she makes, his/her knowledge of information in the Apple developer sessions and level of interest in OS updates and trends. We especially prefer individuals with strong knowledge in the basics, such as data structure or algorithms, since he or she will be able to adjust to any OS quickly.

  • Q. What is it like working at Kakao?

Kakao is at the forefront of mobile services. Kakao plays a pioneering role and acts as a land of opportunity where growth opportunities are presented and information about everything in the domain is shared with others. Kakao provides the best environment for a developer to grow.

jacey interview

Work

Designer who is able to observe people’s minds.
  • Q. What is the role of the UX Research Part?

The name says it all; UX Research Part’s role is to research people’s experiences and provide directions the service should take to become a user-oriented service. We meet our target users, ask them about themselves, their everyday routines and the services they use and like, and observe their daily activities. During this process, we evaluate the real needs our target users have as well as their deepest concerns.
When new services are released, we propose core values that must be provided to our target users, as well as approach methods that are differentiated from existing services. Immediately before the service is released, we diagnose whether the service ‘properly delivers the intended values to our users’, and provide detailed solutions for problems that could be problematic during use.

  • Q. How is your team organized?

The UX Team consists of four parts, Interaction Design, exeLab, NUX, UX Research. Each part has its own area of expertise. The Interaction Part is specialized in discovering various interaction patterns that provide users an experience that ‘sticks to their fingertips’ while using the service, and also prototypes theses patterns. The exeLab Part implements services that can consume contents users are familiar with, such as articles or images, in a totally different way. The NUX Part experiments and proposes elements that can add new values to existing services, including music search.
Lastly, we have the DX, which is a virtual part. They are developers in the UX Team who create ‘experience that can be touched with the tip of your fingers’. Their goal is the share knowledge and make experimental attempts.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

Service teams request researches in order to define problems at hand and find solutions. Therefore, in the early stages of the project, we hold deep discussions with the service planner and the designer about the service and possible directions the service can take. We talk about each of our assumptions about the problem, questions we have about our users and share our philosophy about the service. Through the discussion process, we can come up with a clearer picture of what we want to learn through the research and how we can put the results to use.
The project’s researcher takes on a more independent role when the project is in full swing. The researcher determines the most suitable researching process, and selects and researches targets. The act of analyzing data is an area of expertise only experienced researchers can handle. Resulting outcomes are shared with the service project manager and the researcher also takes part in follow-up activities, including ideation.

Competencies

It’s important to have an open mind and the ability to sympathize.
  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

It’s important to have the ability to newly define problems and tenaciously contemplate approach methods that can be used to solve the problems. The number of research methodologies you can perform and your interview skills are not top priorities. Realistic imagination, which is used to find clues from peoples’ experience and propose the directionality of the service, is also required. You must also be able to objectively select and propose the right ideas out of the so many that are acquired during research.

  • Q. What type of personality is suitable for this job?

This job is suitable for you if you have an open attitude and is ready to listen and relate to any person you meet. This is because you must be able to look right through an unacquainted person in just one or two hours. It’s important to doubt your own experience or standards and be able to sympathize, which enables you to immediately detect actions, desires and inconveniences you would personally not have felt or imagined.

  • Q. What can I do to build my competencies?

It’s helpful to practice doing a lot of thinking during your everyday activities. For example, recognize possible problems such as “my favorite restaurant has so many waiters and waitresses, but why is the service so slow?”. Then analyze their working methods or environments that influence the way they work. Before the problem was analyzed, many would simply say that the waiters/waitresses were slow. However, there are many unexpected factors that leads to slow service. Your ability to think and solve problems will develop if you pay more attention to your surrounding issues, observe people with more depth and try to find solutions.

My Story

An exciting process of experiencing life and understanding people!
  • Q. What were some of the most memorable projects you participated in?

The research project that was conducted this summer in China was probably my most memorable project to date. The study was about how people sell and buy products, apart from going to the shopping mall. However, since I was very ignorant about the Chinese market and the Chinese people’s buying habits or values, the process of creating research questions was near to impossible. Therefore, I expanded my background knowledge by meeting colleagues who had come to China before I had and students studying in China. I also found a lot of material on the Chinese market and went to China to gain first-hand experience. I bought a mobile phone in China to see what it was like to shop and make payments in China. I also opened a bank account and visited many stores that were said to have IT elements in their stores. The best part of being a UX researcher is that you get the chance to go to a strange new world, meet new people and get the opportunity to understand them one step at a time.

  • Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?

The good part about this job is that you get the chance to work on a wide variety of services. It’s also interesting to meet people from all walks of life and hear their stories. You eventually gain a wider perspective of services and people and become very open-minded. On the other hand, it takes time until you get actual ‘feedback’, which means that research results are actually applied to services. Results may be applied to services later or be delayed, or may only be used to ‘understand trends’. However, our achievements cannot be measured by visible results; it’s important that we never forget who we are making these services for.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

I like funny people. They may have a fun personality or not be afraid to sacrifice themselves for the entertainment of the group, but it would be great if that person made everyone smile. People who know how to put a smile on other peoples’ faces know how to be interested in others and are very sympathetic. UX research is all about understanding people, so I would like to work with someone who has a bright and open personality.

Work

Comprehensive branding that moves consumer’s hearts by providing them with [experience].
  • Q. What is the role of the CXD Part?

The CXD Part analyzes the characteristics and directionality of new services created by the Social Impact Business Part, and uses results from the analysis to create a comprehensive brand for consumers, which can be applied both online and offline.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

I’m mainly responsible for doing graphic design and branding for the Social Impact Team. I’m currently doing branding and developing products for a new service that is currently in the works. I think deeply about new experiences consumers feel when they see and use Kakao services or products, as well as the kind of satisfaction consumers will eventually feel through our services. I also design printouts, including packages and leaflets that help consumers double their Kakao experience.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

In branding, the task of creating an “experience” cannot be done by a single person. You need cooperation from planning, UI, UX and developers to create a true experience.
Therefore, I collaborate with many teams.

Competencies

You need to be interested in thing that happen around the world and have a good eye for trends.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

People who studied visual design and graphic design has an advantage when applying for this position. You need to have understanding of online and offline environments and be able to use basic graphic tools. Designing skills are important, but it’s equally important to have an understanding of services and have the ability to see the whole trend.

  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

As I said before, you need to be able to see the entire trend. You also need to be able to see a certain situation from various perspectives, rather than being single minded. In order to do so, you always need to be open to other peoples’ opinions. You have to make the decision, but you must always be ready to listen to and accept opinions raised by others. Your ears must always be open for effective communication.

  • Q. How can I build competencies/qualities for personal growth?

At Kakao, people personally find the work they want to do and take the initiative to complete the work. Therefore, people must never be satisfied with their current situation and must always be able to question possible problems. In order to do so, they must never turn a blind eye to world affairs. They must take interest in things that happen around the world as if it were their own problem. I invest a lot of time in going to design exhibitions, watching movies and studying mass culture, and I also value time I spend communicating with other people in order to widen my perspective.

  • Q. What type of personality is suitable for this job?

You are at an advantage if you are responsible, not in any way complacent, and feel happy when problems you question, no matter how small the problem is, is resolved and improvements are made.

My Story

Join us if you want to make this world a more enjoyable place.
  • Q. What were some of the most memorable projects you participated in?

My first project when I first joined the company was to create an identity for the merger ceremony held to celebrate the newly merged DaumKakao. I joined the company when the two companies were becoming one, so it was not easy to define the company’s traits. Eventually, colors that were previously used by the two companies were excluded and a new identity was created for the merger ceremony. This new identity was used to successfully develop a visual graphic for the merger ceremony. Clothes, badges and many never-before attempted products were developed for this event. This experience still comes in handy when I do branding form products.

  • Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?

There are no correct answers in design. Good and bad designs are defined by how effectively you can persuade your ideas to others. Since there are no correct answers, the level of pain that accompanies the creative process is eased or worsened depending on the amount of effort and energy you invest to get the work done.
The good part about this work is that it can never be replaced by computers. That fact alone makes this work very significant.

  • Q. What would you like to say to those applying for this position?

This position is great if you’re up to the challenge to move people’s hearts and make the world a more enjoyable place to live in through design.

I’m mostly responsible for newly launched brand’s BI. Kakao is currently making active preparations to launch new services. There’s so much work to do if there are a lot of services to be launched, and we’re really busy right now because we’re getting ready to welcome multiple services. ^^

  • Q. How is the BX Cell organized?

Other teams are created to execute a specific goal. However, we provide support for the entire company, so we are assigned tasks and work is allocated whenever support is needed from other teams.

Competencies

You need to be able to think strategically when working with brands.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

I’m a graphic design major and my colleagues all have degrees in design. Your college major may not be an issue if you can prove that you have the competencies, but it’s not going to be easy. This is a specialized job that requires specific education and experience.

  • Q. What are your personal strengths?

When people think of designers, they only think of the ability to produce visual outcomes. However, the ability to think strategically is also important when working with brands. The ability to analyze is also important when working on a project and I think I am more analytical than designers in other areas.
When I joined the company, I think I was assessed on my problem-solving abilities, strategic way of thinking and the ability to analyze.

  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

You need the passion to make the project your own and the ability to persuade many people. That kind of quality is vital in a voluntary company like Kakao. Work skills are a basic necessity.

  • Q. What should I do to develop these competencies/qualities?

Meet a wide variety of people and broaden your areas of interest. You need to be interested in many areas other than design. I usually read a lot or do a lot of research on media.

My Story

I’m proud to be creating a brand that is used by the whole country.
  • Q. What type of personality do BX designers usually have?

I don’t think Kakao BX designers share the same personality, but people from other companies say we share some of the same qualities.^^ We may seem quiet when compared to other cells, but there are definitely some funny people in our team.

  • Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?

The good part about my job is that this work is fun. I get to work on an influential brand and it’s exciting to develop an icon that is used by so many people. I’m proud to be creating a brand even my parent’s generation is aware of.
The bad part is that there’s a lot of work, like now. You may have to work longer hours, depending on your workload.

  • Q. What were some of the most memorable projects you participated in?

First was when I worked on the new CI, which was changed when Daum merged with Kakao. This was an important milestone where the changes were felt by everyone in the company, which made people realize that the company was growing and evolving. Second was the revamped BI for Talk2.0, although many people may not have realized the changes.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

It would be great if the person had the persistence to create results using the design process. It would be even better if that person had professional skills and attitude and was considerate to his or her fellow teammates.

  • Q. What is it like working at Kakao?

It’s great because you can make the work you’re doing yours. You can persuade others and make necessary adjustments by expressing your opinion about the work. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a senior or junior member of the organization.

Work

I always think of ways to improve Kakao’s brand competitiveness.
  • Q. What is the role of the Brand Strategy Part?

Our work is focused on protecting the ‘Kakao’ brand and strengthening the brand’s competitiveness. We also actively provide marketing support for newly launched services. We name these new services, create service slogans that embodies the main characteristics of the service that will be delivered to users, and strategically create and execute various marketing activities.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

My most important role is to come up with a strategy for the Kakao brand that will help increase Kakao’s brand competitiveness. My main concern is to find ways to further raise Kakao’s brand value so that the brand is loved by everyone in Korea. I concentrate on defining Kakao’s brand identity and I also work on developing an image users will instantly remember when they hear the word “Kakao”.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

Brand strategy must move in the same direction as the service or business, so once we develop a strategy, we communicate with each team and ask for their approval or opinion. The service name must reflect intentions the team that develops the service has for that specific service. Therefore, when we name a service, we form a close relationship with the service team, a relationship that starts at project kick-off and lasts until the service name is finalized.

Competencies

It’s important to have insight, and the ability to persuade other and think strategically.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

We have marketing majors in our team. We also have people with degrees in communication, journalism and advertising, but we also have people who majored in un-related subjects. There are even those who have been interested in marketing and branding for a long time and spent a lot of time in college personally studying this field. Marketing and branding’s core objective is to earn the hearts of our users, so people who have many areas of interest and gained a lot of experience would have an advantage when applying for this position.

  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

It’s important to have insight, as well as the ability to persuade others and think strategically.
The role of a brander or marketer is to create value for users, and not the company, when presenting a direction the brand must take to improve its competitiveness or when creating a marketing plan for a newly released mobile service. In order to do so, you, the brander or marketer, must have insight that can be used to discover value for users and be able to think strategically in order to design methods that can effectively deliver those values to users. Lastly, you must be able to persuade the service team so that they can agree with the strategies you have laid out for their service or brand.

My Story

I’m still working passionately with the venture spirit.
  • Q. What were some of the most memorable projects you participated in?

One of my most memorable projects was the one we did to create Kakao’s brand identity. We had to discover the “one thing” that defined Kakao, so that it could become a brand loved by everyone. This project took months to complete. During that time, we interviewed the Kakao Crew and conducted user surveys to diagnose the brand and identify the direction the brand had to take. This project was a great experience, because I was able to make in-depth studies on why people needed the Kakao brand and on values the Kakao brand delivered to our users.

I also enjoyed creating a marketing strategy for Talk 5.0, which was launched when the #Search and channel features were added to KakaoTalk, Kakao’s backbone. We approached users with a message that said ‘Start a new K’Talking habit’, so that users were not taken aback by major changes that were made to KakaoTalk, which is used by the whole country. The purpose of the message was to help users understand the changes easily. In the preliminary stages, we launched the ‘If You Are Wondering’ project for #Search and the ‘If You Are Bored’ project for the channel tab, which raised users’ level of anticipation for the new and improved KakaoTalk. When Talk5.0 was launched, we moved closer towards our users with videos that showed how KakaoTalk was evolving to become a life platform, and how the new KakaoTalk could be used in their daily lives.

  • Q. What is the most rewarding part of this job?

The task of branding the ‘Kakao’ brand, which is used by everyone in Korea, and marketing services that derive from that brand is a burden and blessing at the same time. Kakao is probably the only brand with this level of intimacy with its users. It’s said that people do not buy the product, but buy the philosophy and values the brand has. I will exhort all of my effort to make Kakao a brand that can return honest and sincere values in gratitude for the love we received from our users.

  • Q. What is it like working at Kakao?

At Kakao, each individual proactively approaches a project and makes that project a part of his or her soul. Kakao may seem like a large company, but the venture spirit is very much alive and all employees work with passion. Come and join us if you are a passionate person and do everything you want to do here, at Kakao.

Work

Plan effective targeting that can increase both advertisement efficiency and sales!
  • Q. What is the role of the B2 TF Part?

At the B2 TF, we use methods such as targeting to raise the quality of performance-based advertising and increase sales.

  • Q. What is the difference between performance-based advertising and exposure-guaranteed advertising?

Exposure-guaranteed ad is a fixed method of advertising, which guarantees advertisers with a certain amount of traffic. Performance-based advertising is a flexible form of advertising, where advertising costs are determined through a bidding process and the amount of advertising exposure differs depending on the quality of the advertising material, filtering and targeting.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

I am mainly responsible for targeting. I connect the seller with buyers and develop tools that can be used to easily reach out to consumers. I also use actual user data to match advertisements and analyze the effectiveness of the ad. It is also my role to identify and analyze problems if the matching was unsuccessful.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

There’s not a lot of things I can do alone. I need help from the people in the data analysis section who acquires, collects and analyzes data, and developers who applies data onto the platform. I also get support from other teams when researching, purchasing and analyzing ads. I also work with sales when an advertisement is displayed as a targeting ad, since we have to make sure that advertiser understand what a targeting ad is.

Competencies

You need persistence that will help you find answers, no matter what it takes.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

The people in my team share many similarities, but their college major is not one of them. Their degrees vary from industrial engineering to mathematics, statistics and sociology. Their interest and passion for work is what matters most. However, nowadays, those responsible for planning also analyze user data, so they must be able to analyze data with SQL.

  • Q. What competencies and qualities does this job require?

You need to be creative and be able to understand trends. You must be able to analyze a single data from many different perspectives. You also need the ability or persistence to find the answer, no matter what it takes.

  • Q. How can I build that persistence?

If you are interested in this field and continue to dig deeper, then this sort of persistence grows on you. You’ll concentrate hard once you find out how exciting this work is.
People may become interested for many different reasons, but it’s important to find many things that interest you in your work.

  • Q. What type of personality is suitable for this job?

Generally, this job is perfect for those who are studious or introverted. However, there are many extroverts who are good at their jobs too.

My Story

At Kakao, the more active you are, the better!
  • Q. Why would you recommend this job to others?

The internet business has grown since 1995 but the advertisement business has maintained its momentum. Ads will definitely maintain its influence and grow in the future. Apply for this position if you want to work in a professional, sustainable business area that is full of potential for growth.

  • Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?

The good part of my job is that feedbacks are shown instantly on indexes once improvements have been made. It’s interesting, because you can immediately see shifts in sales once the logic has been changed. The bad part is that you have to juggle operations with new tasks, so it’s difficult to concentrate on the new task or allocate time.

  • Q. What are your most memorable achievements?

In 2011, we revamped our search advertising platform where we changed the search advertising payment calculation method from CPT to CPC. The advertising fee per click soured 159%, which helped us grow into a major advertising platform.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

It would be great to have a person who looked at the work with a totally different perspective. Hopefully, someone who can give a positive excitement to the team.

  • Q. What is the work process like at Kakao?

At Kakao, you have to think and act before someone gives you orders or makes requests. You must be proactive!

Work

Increase user convenience by connecting various services to KakaoTalk.
  • Q. What is the role of the Talk Plus Cell?

The Talk Plus Cell is responsible for connecting other services to KakaoTalk in order to provide users with a wide variety of values. Various vertical services are linked with KakaoTalk, so that users can listen to music on KakaoTalk, send gifts to friends and get coupons via Plus Friends.

  • Q. What is your role in the team?

It’s my role to come up with ideas to connect various services to KakaoTalk, which will in turn increase users’ level of convenience. I’m also responsible for planning the KakaoTalk profile or “More” section.

  • Q. Do you collaborate a lot with other teams?

We do a lot of collaboration with the KakaoTalk Team. The Talk Plus Cell’s core role is to connect with other services, so a large part of our work, more than 80%, is related to cooperating with other teams outside of the KakaoTalk Team.

Competencies

You need to be observant and meticulous.
  • Q. What academic major does this job require?

Service planners in Kakao all majored in different subjects at school. Some studied social sciences while others studied liberal arts and so on. It does not matter what you studied in school, but it does help if you have some knowledge in statistics or indexes.

  • Q. What are your personal strengths?

If you’re responsible for planning the KakaoTalk service, you must be able to take care of everything, from start to finish. My experience planning the KakaoTalk service, which I took care of from phase 1 to the very end, helped me prepare for this position. I became more aware about the structure of the developing process, even though I’m not a developer, and I learned more about, and started to think deeply about creating a more convenient UI/UX for users, even though I’m not a designer.

  • Q. What competencies and qualifications does this job require?

You must be observant and meticulous, because you must be able to detect insufficiencies or conveniences users, including yourself, feel when using the service. You must also be meticulous, because you have to take care of everything, from start to finish.

  • Q. How can I become more observant or more meticulous?

Write the meeting minutes, since this helps you get the whole picture and makes it easier to organize the work that needs to be done. It also helps to look at many service-related indexes and participate in many big and small projects. Being part of many projects and experiencing the entire process helps you gain insight on what needs to be taken care of during a project.

My Story

I feel proud and rewarded to be able to make a service that is used by the whole country.
  • Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?

KakaoTalk is used by the whole country, which is both an advantage and disadvantage. I feel rewarded and am proud that the service I made is being used by everyone. On the other hand, since the whole nations is using the service, I become very hesitant when changing even the smallest functions, and it’s difficult to satisfy everybody. It’s easy to change functions if the service is used by a specific target group, but KakaoTalk is used by everyone so….

  • Q. When did you feel most rewarded?

I once worked on a project that converted all texts in the KakaoTalk service so that it was more easily accessible to our visually impaired users. We received good response from users with visual impairment and were official recognized by related organizations. This project was most memorable because I was a part of something that contributed to society.

  • Q. What type of person would you like in your team?

A person who can discover problems, think of solutions and provide many many ideas! Someone who can propose solutions for what they think may be a problem, rather than working only on something that had been handed to them! • Q. What is the work process like at Kakao?

At Kakao, people who have different jobs and responsibilities all work together, starting from the planning stages of a project.
